Naturalization
Description
Naturalization is the process of becoming a U.S. citizen after birth.
To qualify for naturalization you must:
- Be a Lawful Permanent Resident
- Be 18 years old or older
- Meet Continuous Residence requirements: you must generally be a continuous resident for 5 years after you became a lawful permanent resident. However, if you are married to a U.S. citizen, the residency requirement may be reduced to 3 years.
- Meet Physical Presence requirements: you must be physically present in the U.S. for at least one-half of the 5 year period (or one-half of the 3 year period if married to a U.S. citizen). In addition, you must reside in the state where the application is filed for at least 3 months.
- Meet the Good Moral Character requirements
- Demonstrate knowledge of the English language, U.S. History, and Government
- Take an oath of allegiance to the United States.
