B-1 (Business Visa)

Description
The B-1 is a business visa used by foreign nationals to enter the U.S. to conduct business related activities on behalf of an overseas employer.

Duration of Stay
Normally in increments of 3 months or for the duration of the business trip. B-1 status may be extended for up to 1 year; however, this is rarely permitted since most business trips do not require such an extended stay.

Accompanying Family
Each accompanying family member must individually apply for B-2 status.

Requirements & Special Conditions
  • Stay must be temporary
  • Visitor MAY NOT work for or receive pay from a U.S. company
  • Visitor MAY NOT show immigrant intent
  • Visitor must demonstrate financial means to support himself/herself for the duration of the business trip.


B-2 (Visitor Visa)

Description
The B-2 visa is a nonimmigrant visa which allows foreign visitors to enter the United States for a temporary visit for pleasure or tourism purposes.

Duration of Stay
The B-2 visa is usually issued for 6 months and may be extended for up to 1 year in 6 months increments

Accompanying Family
Accompanying family members are permitted

Requirements
  • Stay must be temporary
  • Visitor MAY NOT work for or receive pay from a U.S. company
  • Visitor MAY NOT show immigrant intent
  • Visitor must demonstrate financial means to support himself/herself for the duration of the business trip.

Special Considerations
  • The B-2 visa is also issued to individuals who wish to remain in the United States to undergo medical treatment. The application process is similar to that of a Tourist Visa, but there are additional documents that must be submitted to establish that the applicant qualifies for the visa.
  • B-2 visa holders are not allowed to work or receive any kind of payment while staying in the United States
